Building a Better Version of the Tesla Key Fob

I’m going to preface this with the obvious disclaimer that this is a very privileged problem to have. With that said, I kinda hate the Tesla Keyfob. It’s bulky in all the wrong ways, get’s easily scratched thanks to the piano black coating and doesn’t even have a way to hang it from your keys. For all these reasons (and the fact I wanted my own style) I decided to build my own!

Assembly Information

Parts Ready For Assembly

Printed Parts:

Parts are avaliable to download on my profile at Printables.com

  • Frunk Button
  • Lock/Unlock Button (both raised and flush versions)
  • Trunk Button
  • Accent Color Detail Ring
  • Button Spacer

Lower Tolerances

  • Top Housing (with detail ring cutout)
  • Top Housing (no detail ring)
  • Bottom Housing
  • Optional Belt Clip

In addition to the printed parts, you’ll also need:

  • A Tesla Model 3 KeyFob (tear down at your own risk!)
  • For Belt Clip version: 2x M2x16mm Screws (Low Profile Flat Head recommended)
  • For Strap version: 2x M2x8mm Screws (Low Profile Flat Head recommended)
  • A Strap (Pick your own material and size, mine is faux leather (11x1.75mm profile))

For additional help in the teardown and extraction of your Keyfob check out my iFixit article linked here. Please be careful when tearing yours down as this is done at your own risk and will void your key’s warranty.
